LOCAL people are being encouraged to apply for grants to help repair and restore historic buildings in Appleby's Conservation Area as the deadline is fast approaching.
Grant offers for the Appleby Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS) expire on March 31. For three-year HERS has awarded grants to owners or lessees of property in the town's conservation area that are in need of structural repair. Priority is given to buildings located along Bridge Street, The Sands and Boroughgate.
Eden District Council said people should apply as soon as possible: "Generally, only buildings partly or wholly in commercial use are eligible for grant aid under this scheme, but some community and public buildings may also qualify as may some environmental enhancements," said a council spokesperson.
Works eligible include structural repairs and repairing traditional features such as chimney stacks and shop fronts. Grants may be offered up to 60 per cent of the total cost of any works.
Applications need to be submitted in sufficient time to allow them to be properly considered. Further information is available from EDC's conservation officer on 01768-212158 or by email to loc.plan@eden.gov.uk.
