COMPLAINTS about the noise generated by low flying aircraft in the north of England during 2004 have fallen marginally.
A total of 159 complaints was received by the Royal Air Force community relations office at Penrith - there were 166 in 2003.
Callers protesting about low flying aircraft in the so-called LSA17 area, which includes all of Cumbria as well as parts of Lancashire and North Yorkshire, numbered around 120 the remainder of the calls came from The Borders and Northumberland.
Ministry of Defence regional community relations officer for Cumbria Tony Parrini said: "There are one or two people that tend to complain. They don't think the peace and tranquillity of the Lake District should be disturbed, but the majority of people are not against it. In a crisis, we never know when low flying is going to be needed. Pilots must be able to avoid radar and, if necessary, to deliver weapons at low level on to targets."
