DALES town Sedbergh made its screen debut in the BBC's The Town That Wants A Twin last week.

Residents of the picture-postcard village headed straight for the television last Wednesday and Thursday night as the first two episodes of the town's search for a suitor was televised.

The series will be aired twice a week for six weeks following the town's romantic fortunes as it is wooed by four prospective twin towns from Slovenia, Austria, France and Cyprus.

Last week saw a visit from a group of ambassadors for the Slovenian spa and ski resort Zrece. A CID officer used to drug busts and criminal catching was given a taste of policing Sedbergh-style, a choirmaster grappled with the town's brass band and a Slovenian school boy left teenage hearts fluttering.

One of the stars of the show Sandra Gold-Wood said: "I thought it was wonderful. The editing was superb it showed us as a very community-spirited lot who were all working together and giving it a go."

Local butcher and member of the town's twinning committee Garth Steadman added the series could only help boost the town's tourism fortunes.

"Everybody has been really excited about the programme and they've all been coming into the shop and giving really positive feedback.

"Sedbergh looked beautiful the sun was shining on the hills and dales so I can't see that the series will do us anything but good. Tourism was one of the reasons why we took part in the series."

Yesterday (Tuesday) saw the third episode in the series when Zrece put on its musical extravaganza.

Tonight (Wednesday) sees the visit from town number two - Athienou, in Cyprus. Ex-New York stockbroker turned dairy farmer Kynacos Pangaros works with Roger Sedgwick on his small farm.
