At St George's Church in Kendal, the retiring collection on Sunday raised £1,100 for the appeal.
The curate, the Rev Beverley Lock, said that because of the concern of parishioners, who wanted to help, it had been decided to hold a bring and buy sale and coffee morning at the church Saturday Jan 8 from 9.30am to 11.30am.
Ms Lock stressed that many churches in Kendal and the surrounding area had responded generously to the disaster.

The appeal is going well at Roman Catholic churches throughout the Lancaster Diocese. Parishioners can give at any of the churches, and the money will be sent via CAFOD the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development.

Kendal Parish Church has already collected several hundred pounds and will also be collecting at this Sunday's epiphany carols service at 6.30pm. The church will also be sending a substantial donation from its funds.
There was a particular reason to make a collection at Ulverston Parish Church, as the Rector, Alan Bing, is part of the Carlisle Diocese's delegation to its partner diocese of Madras in India a trip that was planned long before the tsunami. The rector has taken £2,305 collected at the church. The Diocese of Madras has established a major relief programme with immediate needs for clean water, food, clothing, medical assistance and counselling for thousands of people who have been displaced and are living in churches and church halls. The appeal will continue on Sundays, January 9 and 16.
