THE letter from Cllr Alex Stone (Citizen, December 16) missed the main point about council discussions around open source' soft-ware, which is about financial strategy and the strong possibility that it can make large cash savings by switching from Microsoft to open access software.
This has been the subject of lengthy discussion in the budget and performance committee, which wants to be sure we are exploring every possibility where savings can be made without sacrificing performance.
I'm sure that council tax payers are very interested indeed in the possibility that we can reduce spending in this area by abandoning Microsoft, as other authorities and governments have done. This is what I am advocating.
Cllr John Whitelegg, Green Party
