A DISPLAY of neat, attacking football from Westmorland County Under-18s did not get its just reward in a 3-1 defeat by their Sheffield and Hallamshire counterparts at Kendal Town's Parkside Road ground on Saturday.
The Appleby lads, midfielder Richard Faustino and full-back David Drummond, were in the side for this Association of Northern Counties Youth Competition match.
Excellent build-up play sent Edward Turner and Aidan Caswell blazing a trail to goal in the opening ten minutes, but their final touch was not quite good enough.
Instead Sheffield broke out of defence two minutes later to go ahead and then made it 2-0 with a fine individual goal.
Westmorland rallied well up to the break but Caswell's fine attacking run ended with a tame shot and Matthew Parkin saw his shot saved by the keeper.
Westmorland took the attack to Sheffield early in the second half and Caswell's well-struck effort forced a finger-tip saved at the start of the second half and then substitute Zach Clark rattled the post.
But they had to wait until seven minutes from the end before Turner showed great individual skills to control a pass and cut inside one defender and beat another before coolly side-footing home.
Hopes of salvaging a draw were ended, however, when Sheffield hit back four minutes later with a third goal after keeper Sam Hoyle saved one shot but the rebound fell to the visitors' skipper to score.
