A 5'8'' dog, which has been recruited by Neighbourhood Watch to help fight crime in South Lakeland, is in need of a name.
In the tradition of road safety mascots like Tufty the Squirrel and Charley the Cat, the oversized canine will be on the beat promoting crime prevention initiatives.
It completed its first assignment on Friday, attracting attention to Operation Saturate when officers fanned out across Backbarrow and Hawkshead to dispense crime-busting tips, ultraviolet property marker pens and to recruit Neighbourhood Watch volunteers.
Follow-up postings for the hound are now being planned in South Lakeland schools.
"The dog will hopefully bring the Neighbourhood Watch message to all age groups," said the scheme's development officer Andrea Bell.
However, before it can take on its full duties, the new pup, is in need of a name. Sherlock has already been taken by its Yorkshire cousin but all other suggestions should be sent to andrea.bell@cumbria.police.ukor by post to Kendal Police Station, Busher Walk, Kendal, LA9 4RJ. The best entry will win a large toy dog.
