n SAVE the Children's Windermere charity shop will reopen its doors today (Friday) with a brand new style. Modern design techniques have been used to create a fresh, cool and contemporary new look at the 37 Crescent Road charity store. The Mayor of Windermere, Pat Holmes, will attend the shop reopening at 10am along with Save the Children staff and volunteers. The shop will be jam packed with donated goods ranging from autumn skirts, to jackets and rainwear. A wide range of trading goods including gifts and cards will also be available. The new concept will include picture boards depicting Save the Children's work in the UK and overseas.
n FROM Monday (October 25) people with mobility problems have been able to hire a shopmobility scooter in Ulverston. The scooter is based in the Tourist Information Centre, at the town's Coronation Hall. The new arrangement has been made between South Lakeland District Council and Kendal and the South Lakes Shopmobility. Initially one of the scooters will be available at the Coronation Hall for a six month trial. If this is successful then this will be reviewed and an additional scooter will be introduced.
n LINDETH Howe Country House Hotel, at Bowness, is hosting a traditional bonfire night and fireworks display on November 5 at 7pm to raise funds for the refurbishment of Windermere Junior School children's sports pavilion. Organised on behalf of the NK Stroller charitable trust, traditional food including pie and peas and toffee apples will be served before a bonfire and firework display. Tickets are £10 per adult and £5 per child, from which £3 per ticket sold will be added to the charity donation.
n MARIE Curie Cancer Care's Kendal Support Group is holding its second fashion show at the Castle Green Hotel on November 18. As well as getting to see this season's party frocks available from Olsen of Beale's, Exclusive Lingerie from Barrow will also be showing its latest ranges. Tickets cost £7.50, including a glass of wine, and are available from Olsen of Beale's and the local fundraising office on 01229-822003. The show starts as 7.30pm.
n FLAG day collections at seven venues throughout South Lakeland during the year has helped raise £2,348.18 for the Westmorland branch of the RSPCA. The collections took place at Sedbergh on May 22 (£173.90); Grasmere on June 19 (£242.63); Kendal on July 10 (£485); Hawkshead on July 31 (£272-41); Bowness/Windermere on August 14 (£493); Ambleside on August 28 ((£539.34); and Arnside on September 25 (£142).
n THE South Cumbria Dyslexia Association holds a study day on dyslexia, diet and information and communication technology on Saturday, November 6, at St Martin's College, Ambleside, from 10am to 4pm. The speakers are Victoria Crivelli and Dr Alex Stephenson. A ticket for the day costs £22.50 or £17.50 for members of local dyslexia associations. For more information call 01229-820998.
n OXFAM, on Highgate, in Kendal, is opening itself up to the public, allowing people to see the work that goes on behind the scenes for national Make a Difference Day tomorrow (Saturday). Everyone is welcome to go and see what happens to keep the shop running smoothly and even try volunteering for half an hour. The shop is also looking to recruit volunteers.
n PUPILS from Kirkbie Kendal School will be holding a car boot sale to raise money for their Operation Wallacea scientific expedition to Honduras.The event will be on Sunday, November 7, on the front car park of Kendal College, opening at 9am and closing at 2pm.
n CUMBRIA Soaring Club handed over £1,000 to the Great North Air Ambulance towards the county's dedicated rescue helicopter, The Pride of Cumbria. The money was raised on June 20 at Grasmere during the Lakes Charity Classic competition. Seventy competitors with paragliders took part.
n LOCAL residents will take to the catwalk at the Mint Caf Bar, Kendal, to show off the latest range of winter fashions from Mackays on Tuesday, November 9, from 7pm-9pm, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief. Tickets are priced £4 and available from Mackays Stores or on the door.
n THE KENDAL group of Cancer Research UK held a coffee morning at the Stonecross Manor Hotel, in Kendal, by kind permission of Ann Maclean and Philip Tamme. The event raised more than £1,150.
n A CHARITY Christmas card sale will be held at the Marchesi Centre, Windermere, on Saturday November 13, organised by The Inner Wheel Club of Windermere who will also be holding a cake stall.
n STREET collections for the British Red Cross held in Grange-over-Sands raised £148.39, Hawkshead raised £202.37 and Windermere raised £403.90.
n A LECTURE by 1953 Everest expedition veteran, Mike Westmacott, organised by the Inner Wheel Club, raised £450 for the friends and family of Sandgate School, Kendal.
n A CHRISTMAS fair in aid of the British Red Cross Cumbria Branch will be held on Wednesday, November 10, from 10am to 4pm at Rheged, Penrith. Entry will be by donation.
n A FLAG day for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution held during September in Kirkby Lonsdale raised £599.32.
n A STREET collection held by Kendal St John Ambulance on Saturday, October 16, raised £585.32 for divisional funds.
