A ROAD junction described as "absolutely dangerous" has provoked a strong reaction from Windermere town councillors who want to see urgent action taken before there is a serious accident.

The triangular junction on the A591 at the Windermere Hotel, Windermere, was criticised as being hard to understand for drivers who are not familiar with the road layout. Councillors also said the roadside shrubs and signs obscured the drivers' view when emerging from the train station.

Coun Jim Morphet said: "I hate to say it but if there was a serious accident at this point this would produce some kind of result surely a mini roundabout could be put there at minimal expense."

Coun Yvonne Stewart-Taylor said there had been an accident there when a lad got knocked off his motorbike and that something needed to be done as soon as possible.

"I would like to see the shrubs and sign moved and relocated before somebody is killed," she said.

There was a plan accepted for a roundabout some time ago but at that time all the studies had not been completed and so it could not go ahead. The council will be writing to Cumbria County Council and South Lakeland District Council to request action is taken urgently.
