THIS is the staggering amount of alcohol that police swoops on under-age drinkers in Heysham and Morecambe's West End collected over just TWO weekend nights.

Bobbies collected the haul from kids across And now they are appealing to parents to take more time to find out what their children are getting up to inb the evenings.

Community beat managers Rob Irvine and Ian Nickson from Heysham and West End's Carl Wood took the haul on Friday and Saturday evening patrols.

Says Ian: "We have had a lot of reports about youths congregating in large groups, drinking alcohol and acting in an anti-social way.

"Most of the anti social behaviour is a consequence of alcohol and we will be running constant operations to try and reduce the problem.

"When we speak to the youngsters it is clear that many of them have not told their parents the full truth about where they are and what they are doing.

"As a result, we would urge parents to make sure they know where their children are going.

"I know they would not like it if they had a gang of 30 or 40 youths causing a nuisance outside their front doors."

PC Irvine also wants to get across an important safety mes-sage.

"Last weekend we found two 15-year-old girls so drunk that we had to take them home to their parents, who were extremely shocked," he says.

""They were so drunk that they had put themselves into a very vulnerable position which could have had serious consequences."

Police say they will be running a number of operations over the next few weeks to target under-age drinkers and also make sure off-licences are not selling alcohol to people under age.

PC Wood adds: "We will be running some test purchasing operations in local off-licences to make sure they are only selling alcohol to responsible adults. At the same time we will be looking out for any adults who may be buying alcohol for youngsters."
