WESTGATE Wanderers pro-vided the shock of the day in a rain-hit British Energy North Lancs football league programme beating Cartmel and District on their own turf.
In one of only six games to beat the monsoon, only resolute defence and some woeful finishing kept the Morecambe side in the game as Cartmel deservedly led by a single Joel Drinkall goal at the break.
They must have rued those missed chances when Paul Baines pulled Wanderers level and, as Cartmel fell apart , Aaron Simpson applied the finishing touch to give Westgate a shock lead.
Morecambe Royals started their game at Arnside with a goal in just 25 seconds a shot from distance from Dave Riley.
The home team hit straight back and equalised through the excellent Colin Wilkes before a minute had elapsed - but that was how the score stayed until midway through the second half.
Then two goals in as many minutes put Royals in control Stuart Mayor and Gareth Holmes on target before Mayor popped up for his second of the day to make the score 4-1.
In the only other top flight game to survive, leaders Kirkby Lonsdale put a huge dent in CCM Dynamos ambitions for top spot with a brilliant opening 30 minutes which saw them 3-0 ahead through Yassa Bojeng (2) and Brian Pennington.
Kirkby took their foot off the pedal after the break to allow Layton Young and Russell Daley to reduce the arrears but the game was never as tight as the 3-2 final score suggests.
