ROAD bosses have pledged to investigate after a pensioner took a tumble on a Kendal pavement.

The problem was highlighted by Jackie Blower, who said that her 76-year-old mother fell over on an uneven and cracked pavement slab between Iceland and Motor World in the town's Highgate, injuring her face.

Now Cumbria County Council chiefs have promised to investigate the problem, and another complaint about uneven pavements in Kirkland.

Mrs Blower, from Kendal, said her mother, Jean Duxbury, fell over the slab and was left with bruising to her face and scratched glasses.

Thanking staff at nearby Iceland for helping her mother, Mrs Blower said that she had been told five other people had fallen in the same place.

A family member reported the fall, she said, but nothing had yet been done. The family was considering a claim for the damage for the glasses.

Her mother had agreed to be named to try to draw attention to the dangers: "She did not want it to happen to anybody else."

CCC area support manager for South Lakeland Stuart Pate said that no calls had been made about the problem to the Highways hotline. However, he said that he would make a report, and that an inspector would examine the area.

If something was judged to be dangerous it would be dealt with within 24 hours, he said. Mr Pate said he would also report problems with the pavement in Kirkland on the west side of the street.

Charles Morris, who is in his eighties, said he had struggled with the "dreadful" state of the pavement for three years. He found it difficult both in his scooter and on foot.
