JAZZ ace Dennis Rollins brings his trombone excellence to Morecambe's Platform with a night of tributes to black music.

Acclaimed musician, composer and educator Rollins is well known on the British and international jazz scene and promises to take the listener on an historical musical journey at the Platform tomorrow (Friday).

Inspired by the African Diaspora, starting with the long-established traditional cultures of 16th century West Africa, the show documents the path of peoples and time through music of African origin the horrors of transportation and slavery, field-work songs, the developments of the blues and jazz, and onwards through samba, soul and reggae to the funky, urban and garage grooves of today.

The music is complemented by the artistry of Vijay artist Nick Hillel of Yeast Multimedia, whose mixing of imagery with live performance intensifies the impact of this powerful story.

Rollins was born in Birmingham in 1964 and cut his teeth at the age of 14 studying and performing with The Doncaster Youth Jazz Association.

After years of concentrated study he relocated to London and began playing with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) and the legendary all-black jazz big band The Jazz Warriors.

Rollins was recently appointed Artist in Residence at Leeds College of Music for the forthcoming year.

The Platform show kicks-off at 8pm with tickets, costing £8 (£6 concessions) available from the box office on 01524-582803.
