VALE of Lune's quest to win rugby's War of the Roses ended in failure as they crashed to defeat against Powergen North One newcomers Hull.

The East Riding outfit are the only unbeaten side in the league and look to be well set for a title tilt.

But Lune gave a good account of themselves during the first period of the Powder House Lane clash. after falling behind to an early penalty.

Donovan Sanders restored pari-ty and although Hull went back in front thanks to another three-pointer, Lune roared ahead as Sanders started a flowing move with a cross-field run and the ball was sent wide to winger Jamie Bryan to dive in under the posts.

Sanders added the conversion to make it 10-6 and give Vale hope of upsetting the formbook, though Hull had other ideas and in first-half stoppage time crossed for a converted try of their own.

That score gave the visitors the springboard to take control as Vale were left chasing shadows after the interval.

Theybuilt on their slender advantage and it came as no surprise that they ran in enough points to make the match safe.

There was just one more Vale score as replacement scrum-half Andrew Richardson sold Hull an audacious dummy on his way to a fine solo try with Sanders once again slotting the conversion .

On the plus side for the Vale, debutant lock, South African Jean Rous, had a solid game.

This week, Vale travel to Chester in a clash of two cities.
