MUMS, Dads and youngsters had the chance to enjoy a day at a family learning adventure centre, enter the Millionaire Quiz to win £100 worth of shopping vouchers and discover what their local community development centre and new library bus has to offer them.

The aim of the Family Learning Day at Kirkby Thore CDC was to highlight the pleasure of learning and everyone in the family went away happy with their goodie bag of information, a children's story book and teddy bear.

Cumbria Outdoors, Skills For Life (part of Adult Education), CDC manager Victoria Richardson, Family Learning Officer Adult Education's Sue Doyle and community development worker for the Library Service for Carlisle and Eden, Angela Fitzpatrick, welcomed parents and children to the afternoon of fun and activities.

Paul Aitken, of Cumbria Outdoors, was offering people the opportunity to book a free introductory day out for all the family at M2, Cumbria Outdoor's Family Learning Adventure Centre on the shores of Derwentwater and the chance to have a weekend residence there.

Paul said: "There are plenty of activites the whole family can try out together, such as kayaking, canoeing, sailing, rock climbing, abseiling, fell-walking, orienteering and cycling. It's a chance to try something new as a family."

Nyrie Davies of Skills for Life was running the Millionaire Quiz with a top prize of £100 Tesco vouchers, second £50 of vouchers and a third, fourth and fifth prize of £20 WH Smith Vouchers.

Nyrie explained: "We have courses in literacy and numeracy for adutls and children to work together. Adult Education is open to everyone post 14, and the family literacy and numercay courses are meant to make the learning process fun.

"The Family Literacy course runs weekly over a period of 60 hours. The Family Numeracy over a period of 30 hours. Both courses will help parents or carers to understand what their children are learning in literacy and numeracy at school and show them how to help at home. It also helps parents and carers to "brush up" on their own skills in literacy and numeracy.

"For children who may have missed school due to illness or to have a baby, we can help them "fill in the gaps" in their education and help improve their confidence. We can also help with child care, paying the cost of a childminder or creche."

The new Community Development Centre at Kirkby Thore offers a wide range of courses, that offer flexible learning including introduction to IT.

The day was organised by the Cumbria Family Learning Partnership, part of the council's Education Service, the afternoon is open to all and is just one of a number of activities being held across the county.

Family learning week is a campaign which aims to raise awareness of the importance and scope of family learning as well as strengthening communities and creating more opportunities for the family to learn together.
