MEMBERS of the Baha'i Faith in Appleby celebrate today (Wednesday, October 20) as a holy day - marking the birth of one of the founders of their faith.
This was the day in 1819 when the Bab-meaning "gate"- was born in Persia. He became well known as a religious teacher, and his title referred to his great spiritual insights- he was seen as a gate to the greater understanding of God. He preached the need for social and religious reform and gained many followers.
However the Persian authorities became suspicious of his influence and fearful that they might lose their power and privileges. The Bab was arrested and imprisoned, and finally was executed by firing squad in 1850. Thousands of his followers were subsequently killed as the authorities tried to stamp out his influence completely.
It seemed at the time that this had put an end to his message, but in fact the Bab's teachings laid the basis for the present day Baha'i Faith, which grew and flourished and spread world wide.
To mark the occasion the local Bahai's will hold a special prayer meeting.
