LANCASTER Green Party has appointed Cllr Chris Coates as its new leader in place of Emily Heath, who has stepped down after three years in the role.
Cllr Coates, 47, is a trained carpenter who works for community groups and voluntary organisations carrying out projects across the North West.
He says: "I have been involved in campaigning on peace and environmental issues for as long as I can remember. I never thought I would end up as a councillor, let alone leading a political group.
"I try not to lose sight of the fact that being on the council is a continuation of campaigning by other means.
"The Green Party has had a big impact in Lancaster, with many successes we can be proud of. But there is always more that can be done."
Cllr Heath says: "I have enjoyed the role as group leader, which is mainly about liasing with people at a strategic level, but it's now time for a change - we believe that rotating roles is a good way to develop skills within our group."
