A SWIMMING pool faces closure as backers for a much needed revamp have pulled out.
Shap outdoor swimming pool needs work totalling £500,000 to bring it into line with disabled access regulations and put a roof on it.
Shap swimming pool committee member Mal Stubbs said supporters had hoped for full funding of £500,000 from Sport England but had eventually been offered only £100,000.
He said the pool would eventually close without the funding and might not reopen for the summer season in May.
In the latest community survey, improving the pool was residents' number one priority.
Mr Stubbs said Sport England would only give the money as part of a funding package with other donors but every other potential backer had pulled out when they learned of the amount Sport England had earmarked.
Not only had Sport England given five times less than the committee had hoped, he said, but no one else seemed willing to come forward.
He asked for any businesses or organisations willing to get involved to contact him on 01931-716078.
