Sir, I live quite a way from the Lake District but feel compelled to write about the new speed restriction being introduced on Windemere. I gather there is a backlash from the speed merchants who wish to carry on zooming about the place.
My view of their campaign has been soured by an ugly incident a few weeks ago involving a jet-skier. I was bobbing along in my father-in-law's small yacht with my wife and small baby when we were attacked by a jet-skier who raced at us at high speed before turning sharply, sending a wall of water over us in the boat.
The oaf in question was met with a barrage of abuse - as we pointed out that we had a baby on board who was scared witless and screaming. Instead of making some sort of gesture of apology, the dolt laughed... and did it again!
We got straight onto our mobile phone to report the matter to the lake wardens.
So, what had been planned as a quiet family outing - a gentle day's sailing on a tranquil lake - was turned into an ordeal in which a baby was soaked and terrified.
I know there was only one person to blame but it is clear to me that the two modes of water transport do not mix. A ban on speedsters will bring some much-needed peace and quiet to an otherwise heavenly spot.
