SOUTH Lakeland and Eden residents helped to raise funds for the work of Macmillan Cancer Relief by holding coffee mornings as part of the World's Biggest Coffee Morning event.
A coffee morning at the Old Forge, Kirkby Stephen, organised by Jane Bell, Moira Gaine and Tom Russell, helped raise £875 and was attended by 108 people. Residents and guests at McCarthy and Stone's development, at Blackhall Croft, Kendal, raised £295 and a group of Langdale Wives raised £370.
MEMBERS of South Westmorland Amnesty International Group kicked off a new campaign to highlight violence against women worldwide with a stall in Kendal. Members of the public signed a total of 116 postcards with messages of hope and solidarity to women's groups in Columbia and the United States.
A STREET collection held by South Lakes Society for the Blind in Windermere and Bowness on September 18 raised £249.02. This money will be used to provide practical help and support through the Sight Advice Centre, at Stricklandgate House, Kendal. BLOOD donor sessions are being held in Ulverston's Coronation Hall on Monday (October 11). Anyone who is able to give blood, or would like to find out more about joining the British Bone Marrow Register, should attend between 2pm and 4pm or 5.30pm and 7.30pm. EXTRA nursing care for terminally ill cancer patients who have chosen to die at home can be provided in the area by Marie Curie Cancer Care following a street collection in Arnside on Saturday, August 28. The event, organised by the Kendal Support Group, raised £277.72.
TWO former Sedbergh School students, brothers Martin and Graeme Lister, were part of a five-strong team who walked through the Yorkshire Dales, from Ilkley to Bowness, over the weekend (September 25-26) to raise more than £7,500 for Muscular Dystrophy research.
THE Arnside Branch of the RNLI is organising a charities fair at the Gaskell Hall, Silverdale, on Wednesday, October 27. Entrance will be 50 pence and the fair will be open from 10.30am to 1pm.
n A MENINGITIS funday took place over the weekend of September 18 and 19 at Focus DIY, in Kendal, and £1,143.77 was raised.
n SAVE the Children collected £63.62 in Milnthorpe on September 10.
