Highwaymen - (18) - Entertainment in Video - rating: 1 out of 5.

No, this isn't a reworking of Dick Turpin's exploits, but a tense contemporary thriller about a man on a single-minded mission of revenge.

Jim Caviezel plays a man hell-bent on avenging his wife's death by a murderous hit-and-run driver (Colm Feore) who spends five years chasing his quarry.

When the killer's latest victim (Rhona Mitra) somehow survives his attack, he doubles back to finish the job, giving Caviezel's character the chance to use her as bait.

Director Robert Harmon, who helmed the cult shocker The Hitcher, employs all kinds of visual tricks, from flashbacks to slow motion, but I'm afraid this horror-thriller gets the thumbs down from me.

There's little explanation of the motives that drive Feore's fiendish character to select his victims seemingly at random, while Caviezel sails through the entire film with the same fixed facial grimace.

My advice is to steer clear of this brutal film that goes down a blind alley and never manages to get back on track. Out to rent or buy on video & DVD
