FOOTBALL: Appleby are not playing their best football but they are managing to win and they progressed in the Westmorland FA County Cup with a 2-1 win at home over Windermere after extra time on Saturday.
After a scoreless first half, Windermere opened the scoring and Appleby keeper Paul Crawford made a couple of stunning saves - including a point-blank one from Andy Ford - to keep them in this first-round tie.
Windermere had a player sent off for foul language and Appleby used the extra man advantage to draw level when Nicky Slee ran from the halfway line to score with an unstoppable shot into the far corner.
That took the tie to extra time and Appleby produced the winner when John Coward scored from inside the penalty box after appeals from Windermere for hand-ball were waved aside by the referee.
