MORECAMBE'S attempts to make it into the second round of the LDV Vans Trophy for the first time in their history were derailed by 10-man Huddersfield Town.
The Shrimps travelled into West Yorkshire buoyed by recent good form but were always going to be up against it with Peter Jackson's side flying two divisions above them.
But they gave a good account of themselves in the opening stages with Wayne Curtis and Michael Twiss both going close before keeper Phil Senior saved well from Michael Howard as they finished the first period stronger than their hosts.
But Jackson's interval words had the desired result as the Terriers came out after the break with more bite and determination.
And they got off to the perfect start when David Mirfin planted a header home to make it 1-0.
Morecambe were not out of the game at this stage and their chances were done a power of good when Town striker Danny Schofield received a straight red card following an off the ball incident with Kieran Walmsley.
Garry Thompson wasted a good chance to level the game straight after the dismissal but he shot over the bar when he should really have scored.
And when Curtis wasted a similar chance, the Shrimps started to think it was not going to be there night.
That proved to be the case when Junior Mendes converted a twice-taken penalty on 83 minutes before the experienced Lee Fowler gloriously curled a free kick beyond the despairing Adam Sollitt to make it 3-0.
The LDV Vans Trophy was not high on Jim Harvey's priority list but he will hope that his Morecambe men can return to top form in time for Saturday's trip to the jellied eel paradise of Canvey Island.
