AFTER two disappointing defeats at West Port St Helens in the Powergen Cup and Liverpool St Helens in North 1, the Vale of Lune recorded their first league win of the season against undefeated Morley, to restore confidence and boost the morale Powder House Lane outfit.

Playing with pace and flair in all departments the Vale gave the visitors few scoring opportunities and apart from one lapse just before half time they successfully dealt with Morley's attempts to breach their line.

Vale's winning margin might have been larger but stand-off Donovan Sanders sprayed a number of penalties wide of the target. However the Vale, despite some shortcomings in the set pieces, were worthy winners.

Following a high tempo opening a penalty goal from Sanders opened the scoring after 15 minutes. Eight minutes later the Vale went further ahead with a solo try from Sanders, who played with authority throughout as fly half.

From a quickly taken tap penalty Sanders cut the Morley defence to ribbons for his try, which he converted.

With the Vale generally on top the half ended with Morley clawing their way back to level the scores with a goal and a penalty goal.

Vale quickly re discovered their form at the beginning of the second and within five minutes had re taken the lead. Another tap penalty confused Morley. A perfectly timed pass from Neil Bennets sent winger Aiden Doherty scampering over on the right for an unconverted try.

Morley pressed for a score but the Vale's defence was cast iron in all areas and few clear-cut chances emerged. In addition a mobile Vale side always posed a threat, forcing the visitors to concede a number of penalties.

Coach John Morgan has worked the squad intensively since the Liverpool St Helens game and the players responded with a much-improved performance against Morley.
