FLOWERS and cards are mounting on a Morecambe street where a 12-year-old boy was killed after a car swerved across a road and ploughed into him.

The youngster was riding his bike and a 15-year-old girl was walking next to him when the accident happened on South Road.

The Ford Fiesta van was travelling down the road when it left the carriageway, crashed into a lamppost and knocked the pair down on Tuesday evening.

The youngster, who had not been named as the Citizen went to press, was rushed to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary suffering from multiple limb injuries.

Upset children, parents and neighbours visited the scene bearing flowers after the youngster was pronounced dead on Wednesday morning.

One card read: " We miss you lots. We are sad you died" and another said: "I will miss you for the games of football."

Police closed the road for a few hours as fire crews from Morecambe, Bolton-le-Sands and Lancaster cut the driver free using hydraulic cutting tools.

He was also taken to the RLI but was later released having suffered only minor injuries.

Bill Houston, who lives on South Road, says it was a tragic accident' waiting to happen.

Tragedy on a street From front page He told the Citizen that residents have been campaigning for traffic calming measures on the one-mile stretch of road for more than one year.

"We have collected 300 plus signatures because I and other residents have seen cars speed down here at 60 to 70 miles per hour. I believe that that child would be alive today if somebody had taken notice of what we have been saying."

He says campaigners want to see the road split into three sections with width restrictions and speed humps to curb motorists' speed.

Mr Houston says a speed check was conducted in August by local authorities, but says it was flawed' because it was the quietest time of year with the schools being on holiday.

"It meant that nothing was done but the situation here is getting serious and something needs to be done now," he says.

Sgt Paul Mason of the Road Policing Unit in Lancaster and Morecambe, says: "We are aware of speed complaints on that road and we have carried out enforcements, but we need to look at it again.

"We don't know if speed is a factor in this incident, but something needs to be done and we will work with Lancaster City Council to see what we can do to improve this road."

On August 18, 2003, a 14-year-old was killed less than 30 yards from the accident on Tuesday.

Sgt Mason, who was not working in the area at the time, says he is sure that something would have been done following the accident in 2003, adding: "What we need now is a long term solution."
