KIDS can take the plunge and learn how to become lifesavers.

The Royal Life Saving Society wants children to join the Kendal and South Lakeland lifesaving club and that could lead to them becoming a hero.

The local club, based at Kendal Leisure Centre, is staging training towards the Bronze Medallion, one of the highest respected awards in lifesaving.

Entrants, who must be over the age of 12, are taught a range of water-based skills including resuscitation techniques.

They must then pass a theory test before gaining the engraved medallion.

"The Bronze Medallion is our flagship award and widely recognised by the public," said chief executive Di Standley.

"My hope is that more and more people will come forward and take it. It is a fun and social pastime but it can also help us achieve our aim of making sure everyone in the UK knows how to save a life should the occasion arise."
