I AM not surprised residential and office accommodation could be allowed on Morecambe's central promenade even though I was accused by the leader of the council of mischief making when I predicted this 12 months ago.
One only has to look at the website of Midland Hotel developers Urban Splash to see that that is what they specialise in.
No-one is questioning their reputation as a successful comp-any. But one might question why they have not yet shown some commitment to stopping the deterioration of the Midland, a Grade Two listed building.
After reading the development brief I cannot believe the present administration at Lancaster City Council does not have a hidden agenda it is so full of contradictions.
It states that flatted residential development on upper floors would be acceptable' but then adds Lancaster district has an over-supply of residential permissions'.
Two months ago the city's regeneration officer speaking to Property Week is reported as saying the brief is for mixed development, it will almost certainly include some housing'. If this is agreed then what happens to the festival site?
With housing close by how long will it be before complaints from residents put a stop to the resort's festivals?
If the brief is to be used as a basis for public consultation then it will be interesting to see whether anyone actually listens to what the people say.
Cllr Evelyn Archer, Morecambe.
