I READ Ray Wilcockson's letter about the future of the Midland Hotel (Citizen last week) and was dismayed to learn that it is a grade two listed building.

If the city council is serious about Morecambe seafront's regeneration then the next step should be to find some way round the listing of this hideous eyesore and flatten it at the first opportunity.

Even if it is renovated it will still be a grotesquely ugly building. Another example of this 1930s Art Deco architectural style is the former swimming baths at Kingsway and, like the Midland, it is a flat-roofed, square, featureless, characterless carbuncle.

I understand this building is also listed. How these buildings can be deemed of such architectural or historical importance to be given a Grade Two listing is beyond me.

As a council tax payer living in Morecambe, I would be very unhappy if any public money was committed to propping up a building that has blighted the seafront for too long. Do us a favour Urban Splash. Knock it down.

S Hyde, Morecambe.
