I AM concerned about the possible fate of the Morecambe Community Education Centre in Poulton Road.

The building is for sale and could go to an opportunistic developer only to be demolished and as it is not listed there is nothing to prevent it.

When it opened in 1912 the Art and Technical School, as it was then, was hailed as Morecambe's finest public building. Anyone who appreciates the qualities of good architecture cannot fail to be impressed by it.

Over the last 40 years we have lost almost all the interesting buildings in the resort the latest being the Grosvenor Hotel which was recently demolished without anyone raising an eyebrow.

The few remaining buildings of note appear to be teetering on the brink of the abyss and there is nothing to stop people devoid of any sense of history crawling from under the stones and giving them a shove.

I feel deeply angry when I think of the tacky new build that Morecambe has seen When Morrison's was built there was a glimmer of hope and I was foolish enough to think the cinema and market would be similar. How wrong could I be? They are both no more than chicken shacks.

The largest swimming stadium in Europe, its style complimenting the Midland Hotel next door, was demolished for a duck pond, a plastic dome and a distorted pyramid, which I am pleased, no ecstatic, to say has already gone.

With regard to Poulton College, I have a suggestion for its future use being to amalgamate the three BEST centres, which are occupying premises intended for retail purposes, and the Adult Training Centre again in business premises and put them in the one building, returning it to use as a centre of learning.

Annette Sunderland, Morecambe.
