HOUSEHOLDERS in Cumbria are warned to be on the lookout for doorstep builders, following a complaint to Cumbria County Council's Trading Standards Department.

The latest con came to light when builders started dismantling barge boards and guttering at a house in Oxenholme, near Kendal, when the owner was at work. The owner had not agreed to any work and was alerted when her neighbour rang her at work. The owner dashed home to confront the builders and called the police and Trading Standards. The trader was adamant that his actions were a mistake and agreed to replace the barge board initially removed.

Phil Ashcroft, Head of Cumbria Trading Standards, said: "These traders leaflet and/or cold call addresses. My advice to the public is never to employ cold callers".
