THE PARISH show at Kaber celebrated country life, but the sheep, for which the event was famous, can no longer be part of the day.

Due to restrictions imposed following the foot-and-mouth outbreak of 2001, Kaber Parish Show no longer has the popular sheep classes. The show date was originally chosen so that the animals going to the prestigious Kirkby Stephen sale the following week could be shown in all their glory at the parish event. But the new six day rule on movement of animals has brought that tradition to an end.

But the small rural community were determined to keep their show alive. Show secretary Jean Cousins said: "Almost every family in the parish entered an exhibit in this year's show, making the Industrial, Children's and Horticultural sections displayed in the Old School very good this year."

The 15th Annual Kaber Parish Show raised £146 and included children's games on the village green and afternoon teas.

Former Kaber Parish resident Isabel Swinbank, who now lives in Dufton, is this year's Show President.

Mrs Swinbank said: "I was honoured and delighted to receive the invitation to be president of Kaber show. It is 40 years since I left the parish."

Mrs Swinbank presented the prizes and commented on the high standard and number of entries in this year's event.

Chairman of Kaber Parish Show Michael Morland thanked the judges Mrs Pat Brogden and Mrs Elizabeth Hodgson in the Industrial Section, Miss Bianca Carlisle in the Children's Section and Mr and Mrs Norman Guy in the Horticulture Section.
