MY FEELINGS on the northern bypass decision are mixed.
I am absolutely delighted that the Western bypass has been rejected. I have campaigned, argued and appeared at public inquiries against this road since 1989.
Not only would the road have infringed on important wildlife habitats, it would have destroyed what I think of as the natural soul' of the west of Lancaster.
In other words it would have ruined walks along the river at Aldcliffe, the cycle path towards Glasson Dock, the path along Freemans' Wood and the quiet beauty of the canal to Galgate.
However, my delight at the demise of the Western bypass is tinged with sadness. Neither the destruction along the Northern route, nor the well known argu-ments about global warming and pollution due to new roads and traffic have been taken seriously by most local politicians.
I would have hoped that the world would have moved on and by now we would instead be spending serious amounts of money on measures to permanently reduce traffic. The Green Party will continue to push for more attractive alternatives to the car and lorry.
Cllr Jon Barry, Lancaster.
