Everyone knows how useful the web can be as a resource for finding information and shopping, but it’s also a fantastic way to get lost in time and space.
Whether you’re in front of your computer on a break (obviously not on the company’s time) or sitting at home, here are some frivolously fun websites to visit.
Hilarious headlines
The Onion is the probably the world’s greatest fake newspaper, always amusing and often hilarious with headlines like “Shiny, wriggling object attracting interest among fish community” and “Dolph Lundgren wins long, courageous battle against fame”. It’s always good for a quick chuckle. Find it at www.theonion.com. If the Onion is a bit too American for you, then check out the UK’s take on spoof local papers at www.framley
examiner.com.
Discover web wizard
Half genius and half raving lunatic, Zefrank has become a bit of an icon on the web. Leading a double life as an extremely talented graphic designer and bizarre web-wizard, he showcases both his professional and personal projects on www.zefrank.com. There’s enough stuff here to keep you amused for hours. The site even has a panic button which loads ‘The Better Employee Monthly Journal’ to stop you getting caught out.
Morbid humour
The Darwin Awards are given posthumously to people who contribute to the evolution of the human race by removing themselves from the gene pool in ridiculously stupid ways. A bit morbid but very funny, the awards can be found at www.darwin
awards.com/darwin.
Moving pictures
Ascii is the name for the collection of symbols produced by a standard computer keyboard; moving pictures can be created by animating these symbols on a screen. Pointless, but very clever, the entire Star Wars film has been painstakingly recreated in this format at www.asciimation
.co.nz.
Name generator
Bored with your name? The web has a plethora of sites for generating new ones. Find out your cyborg name at www.cyborg
name.com (Gazette comes out as General Artificial Zombie Engineered for Troubleshooting and Terran Exploration. Some more name generators can be found at http://humor.about.com/od/namegenerators/.
These should keep you chuckling for quite a while. Unfortunately I have to stop looking at funny websites and do some real work now.
