A KENDAL man was helped from the River Kent after an apparent suicide attempt in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The 42-year-old leapt into the river behind Castle Street in Kendal near Gooseholme weir and was spotted by two passers-by at around 2.30am who helped him to safety.

Inspector Richard Vernon of Cumbria Police said: "We don't think he was in a particularly deep section of water but he could have been in danger if he had been allowed to stay in the river. He may have been trying to kill himself. He has jumped into the river before."

The man was taken to Westmorland General Hospital but he is not believed to have had any injuries.
