MORE than 100 arrests were made as part of a summer crack-down on crime in Morecambe.

The resort has traditionally seen a rise in crime over the summer - but police launched Operation Sustain' in an effort to change the story.

Now, Insp Jill Townley says the operation, run through July and early August, has been a great success.

It has seen arrests made for robbery, burglary, public order offences and supplying drugs.

"The summer has historically seen a significant increase in crime in the resort and the victims were too often holiday-makers and visitors to the town, which inadvertently would deter them from returning to the area," says Insp Townley.

"A consultation process was held in our communities and anti-social behaviour and drugs were high on the list.

"Over a six-week period officers were deployed to Morecambe from across the division and adopted tactics to address these issues. More than 100 arrests were made.

"There were also 11 warrants executed at home addresses of known drug dealers and quantities of heroin, amphetamine and cocaine recovered," she adds.
