RECYCLING of household waste in South Lakeland is ahead of target thanks to kerbside recycling schemes run by the district council.
South Lakeland District Council is ahead of targets set by the Government and is the third most improved council in the country for recycling.
Things looked quite bleak for SLDC 18 months ago when Agri-Environment Minister Elliot Morley wrote expressing concern that the council would miss recycling targets set by the Government.
But Mr Morley has written to the council again, this time congratulating it for beating its target.
SLDC says the turn-around is due to the introduction, in September 2003, of kerbside recycling schemes in place in Arnside, Milnthorpe and Kirkby Lonsdale.
The kerbside service was extended to Ulverston, Coniston and Hawkshead in July this year and the council is on course to meet its target of recycling 21 per cent of the district household waste by 2005/6.
