RADIO enthusiasts descended on Windermere for a series of live link-ups and they even managed to get in touch with a station in Athens set up to commem-orate the Olympic Games.
The Royal Air Force Amateur Radio Society (RAFARS) hosted the event at the Windermere Steam-boat Museum under the name Aurora. The amateur radio station, which was principally manned by cadets from 1127(Kendal) Squadron Air Training Corps, made nearly 100 contacts with amateur radio stations around Europe, including those commem-orating the Olympics.
The BBC Radio Cumbria bus attended and the RAFARS was able to make several live inserts on the Saturday morning shows describing the event.
There were other attractions on the lake with realistic, radio-controlled boats and yachts, a micro light aircraft parked up for inspection and during the weekend several of them flew over the site while in contact with the radio on the ground. RAFARS area representative Roy Walker said: "Amateur radio operators from around the country attended to man the station."
