POLICE are actively encouraging the public to use Crimestoppers to report drink drivers.
Officers want to encourage the public when they have information about an individual who habitually drink drives, or indeed is about to drive having had a drink to contact them. Either by leaving information on the Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111 or direct to the Communications Centres on 01768 891 999. All information will be treated in the strictest confidence.
Drinking and driving is often perceived as a Christmas issue. Figures, however, show that people are more likely to drive after a drink in the spring and summer. As a result, officers will be targeting drink drivers county wide. A summer drink drive campaign started last Friday, and is running until August 31. This is intended as a timely reminder to the public, that driving under the influence will not be tolerated and officers will be robust in dealing with offenders.
There are random checkpoints, where people suspected of drink driving will be breathalysed.
In addition, when people have committed a traffic offence and as a result are stopped by the police, they too will be breath tested.
Inspector Iain Clark of the constabulary's Mobile Support Group said: "In the summer there is often more temptations to drink and drive, especially when the weather is fine, people have barbecues, or go out for a pub lunch. By all means enjoy yourself. But if you drink, do not drive."
