ONE of the best-kept churchyards in Britain is in the Lancaster district.

The churchyard at St Luke's, Slyne, has made it into a national shortlist of 12 churches competing for the prestigious title.

The winner of the competition which offers a top prize of £1,000 will be announced in November but St Luke's is already guaranteed a place in the 2005 Ecclesiastical calendar.

Judges selected St Luke's for the shortlist from hundreds of entrants because, in addition to its attractive looks, natural areas have recently been restored and improved and the grounds are used for local activities such as barbecues, fetes and the annual Great Easter Egg Hunt'.
