MODERN day navvies are undertaking restoration work on the flight of locks along Lancaster Canal at Tewitfield, near Carnforth.
Members of the Waterway Recovery Group, who give time voluntarily, are clearing stone crusted bywash' channels, which allow excess water to by-pass the locks, of nearly 50 years of decay.
Materials and equipment for the project are being provided by the group with aid from the Lancaster Canal Trust.
British Waterways is supporting the two-weeks project with help from its engineering staff. The work will be completed this weekend.
