A HEYSHAM grandmother's crusade to get new play facilities for kids is gathering pace....
Christine Anderson set up the Trumacar Action Group after Lancaster City Council took down swings and slides in a local park.
She pledged to raise cash to buy play equipment so that residents could build a new play park.
But the plans were thrown into disarray when a fellow resident of the estate complained about the action group's plans for a fund-raising car boot.
"We were supposed to be holding a car boot but it was cancelled atthe last minute because someone complained about it," she says.
"The council said we could not go ahead, which is sad because it would have fetched in a lot of money."
But Christine says the group, set up last November, is still going from strength to strength.
She goes on: "There are about 140 kids on this estate but only one swing - which is ridiculous.
"There is nothing for them to do and so they play on the streets, which is not good."
And she adds: "If the council will not provide a play area then we will pay for our own park."
The group has now applied for a grant to buy play equipment but needs to raise match funding' before the cash is handed over.
No-one was available for comment at Lancaster City Council for the Citizen to find out why the park was taken down.
However, a spokesman said the car boot sale was not allowed because no planning permission was sought from the city's leisure or housing departments for the event.
"If the group wishes to talk to us further regarding the fun day we would be happy to meet with them again," she added.
