A MORECAMBE teenager was airlifted to hospital after plummeting 30 feet onto rocks from a cliff.

The 14-year-old, from Stanley Road, suffered head and leg injuries in the fall at Heysham Head.

He was playing with three friends on Tuesday when he lost his footing and slipped off the edge.

He suffered head and leg injuries but was conscious when emergency services arrived.

A rescue mission was launched and fire crews, police and paramedics drove through Heysham village not knowing where the youngster was.

The North West Air Ambulance was scrambled and was able to land on the beach just metres from where the boy had dropped - pictured above.

Fire-fighters and paramedics took to the sands and got the teenager on a stretcher before the air ambulance whisked him away in minutes to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. He was released on Wednesday.

Isobel Hutchinson, who lives nearby, said the village was 'abuzz' with activity as the emergency services raced through.

"The lad was very lucky because the stones are very sharp there and so you would not imagine that he would get away with only slight injuries.

"I can't remember it happening for a long time, but the paths are eroding up there and so there is not much to walk on. You really do have to watch your step," she told the Citizen.
