A FORMER head boy of Queen Katherine School in Kendal is to receive a bravery award after tackling an armed man in Leeds.

James Entwistle, 22, left the school in 2000 and joined West Yorkshire police in 2002 as a probationary officer. On duty in the early hours of one morning in the Chapeltown area of the city last month, he and a colleague were called to an incident where a man was seen in his house brandishing a gun.

Mr Entwistle and his colleague managed to coax the disturbed man to open his door before overpowering and arresting him. The gun turned out to be a replica, but inside the man's house officers found dozens of swords, antique and replica guns and other weapons. Mr Entwistle told the Gazette he had to act because the risk of the man leaving the house and becoming a danger to himself or to others was too great. He will be awarded the Divisional Commander's Commendation for bravery in September.

His mother, Sarah Kempster, from Castle Oval, Kendal, said she was "immensely proud" of him.
