MOTORISTS are being warned to steer clear of Lancaster city centre next week when roads chaos is expected.

Lancashire County Council is to carry out major road works in South Road and Thurnhan Street from Sunday.

It could mean serious disruption across the city centre.

The council has to re-surface South Road and one lane at the top of Thurnham Street.

Work will start on Sunday and last for four days with contractors working largely in the evening from 7pm to midnight to lesson the impact.

Diversions will be in place, with traffic travelling south diverted at Dalton Square via Nelson Street, East Road, Wyresdale Road, Coulston Road and Bowerham Road to re-join the A6 at the Pointer Island.

Traffic travelling north into the city on South Road will be restricted to a single lane and controlled by manually operated stop/go boards.

Drivers are being advised to avoid the area.
