WHEN, oh when, will they repair the burst water main posing as a fountain in Market Square, Lancaster?
There are other absurdities in the city centre, too, such as the two trees planted on Church Street during pedestrianisation. Wow, such extravagance!
If the city council really wants to improve the street scene why does it not plant more trees?
Improving the look of the city could also involve the extension of the recently installed Edwardian-style street lamps to other areas, perhaps Market Street and Market Square initially.
To be positive, the improvement of lighting in the castle area to enhance the safe use of the cobbled area is laudable.
But why not sandblast the Priory and light it up effectively at night? It would look great.
I believe the council could also find space for a green' area in the city centre, with maybe a sensory garden for the blind and visually impaired.
Canterbury has such a garden (financed by the council) which has raised beds with sweet-smelling shrubs and plants.
And how about knocking down that hideous and unimaginative Sixties-style structure opposite the unique St John's Church and making better use of the space of course I jest, just.
If Lancaster does not get its lateral and imaginative thanking cap on it will always lag behind other historical towns and cities in its appeal. Many of them have shown incredible imagination in making their centres better through improving streetscapes.
