Lying to the North of the Lakes, nestling between the shores of Derwentwater and England's fourth highest mountain (Skiddaw), Keswick is one of the Lake District's most popular destinations.

With a busy Saturday market and shops specialising in outdoor wear and local crafts, the grey-slate Victorian town of Keswick, which has inspired many artists, poets and writers, is an ideal base from which to enjoy a wide-range of activities.

With sports like abseiling, windsurfing and golf on offer, as well as many pubs and eating places, however active you're feeling, there's plenty to do and see.

Main attractions

The Cumberland Pencil Museum traces the history of the pencil, from the local discovery of graphite, and is home to the world's longest coloured pencil - one for the family.

Enjoy a 50-minute cruise around Derwentwater or embark at one (or all!) of the seven jetties en-route and follow a planned walk.

Movie buffs or car-enthusiasts should view the famous collection of celebrity, film and TV vehicles at The Cars of the Stars Motor Museum.

And if it's wet...

Why not try rock-climbing in a safe and controlled environment at the Keswick Climbing Wall and Activity Centre, where introductory lessons could have you scaling the area's heights in no time.
