A GOLF day organised by Mark Mace, Barclays premier banking manager based at Highgate, Kendal, has raised nearly £400 for the Brathay Hall Trust to help support disaffected and disadvantaged young people.

He invited 40 clients to the event at Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club and a raffle and auction was held with £362 being raised to date. Mr Mace is an ex-Kendal and Cumbria rugby player who also played cricket for Kendal in the Northern League. He said that his aim was to put "a little back" into the South Lakes area and he plans to continue to raise funds for Brathay. The winners were Colin Baker, Paul Farrer, Philip Hoyle and David Whittaker.

WALKERS will be crossing the sands of Morecambe Bay for a picnic on Chapel Island on Sunday (August 8) to raise cash for Ulverston's Dickensian Festival. The gentle cross-sands trip is one of the few to the island, which can only be visited on a limited numbers of days a year because of the tides and weather. Tickets to take part are £3 per adult and are available from Ulverston shops, including Homestyle and The Ships Wheel Caf. The event was postponed from July 25 because of heavy rain.

A MEETING of the Cumbria Advisory Thyroid Service will be held at the Abbot Hall Social Centre in Kendal on Wednesday, August 11, at 7pm. The group was formed to give advice and information to people who are suffering from thyroid problems, mainly in the Morecambe Bay Primary Care Trust area. After a short introductory speech, the meeting will continue with a question-and-answer session. Refreshments will be served at the end of the meeting. Admission will be £1 at the door.

THERE will be a blood donor session at Ingleborough Community Centre, Ingleton, between 10am and noon, and 2pm and 4pm on Sunday, August 8. On Wednesday, August 11, there will be blood donor sessions at the St John Boste Social Club, Gillinggate, Kendal, between 2pm and 4pm, and 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

THE Barrow and District Society for the Blind held a flag day in Coniston on July 14 and Hawkshead on July 21 and raised £44.05 and £98.44 respectively.

THE Kendal branch of Save the Children held a street collection in Kirkby Lonsdale on July 17 and collected £435.11.
