POLICE arrested a teenage girl at school after a large kitchen knife was found in her bag.
The pupil was held before lessons began at Queen Elizabeth School, Kirkby Lonsdale.
Police said teaching staff were alerted because of the pupil’s suspicious behaviour.
They searched the girl and found the knife and a list of names of pupils and teachers.
Staff called the police and an officer wearing a stab vest arrived to search the girl.
The officer seized the knife and list of names, and the girl was taken into custody for questioning.
Kendal police said an investigation was taking place into whether the incident was malicious or accidental.
Insp Ian Carruthers said: “We have spoken to all the people on the list and they are fully aware of what has happened.
"The knife was found in her bag thanks to good work by the school staff.
“As far as we are aware no threats were made to students.
“This is a very rare incident in South Lakeland. The school reacted and the knife was found before it was taken out of the bag.”
Head teacher Chris Clarke said the school held a special assembly after the incident last Thursday to give details and offer reassurance.
He said: “The matter was dealt with quietly and efficiently before lessons began. No one was in any immediate danger.
“The school is working with police to ensure the future safety and well-being of all parties.
“The incident was dealt with by staff in a manner in keeping with the standards of care with which the school has a strong reputation.”
