BERNARD Thornborrow welcomed members to Orton and Tebay Local History Society, at the market hall, noting that the annual meeting will be held on March 22, and the April meeting will be about the Tebay War Memorials.
An exhibition will be held in Orton Market Hall, over the Spring Bank Holiday, to coincide with the church exhibition. Members were asked to think of ideas for displays.
The speaker was Rob Matthews, who talked about Penrith at the Cross Roads of History, explaining that so often the ‘lie of the land’ determined history — which was true of Penrith.
There are a number of stone circles in the area, and important Roman roads and forts, and Penrith had been a trading centre for many centuries.
His slides took a tour around well-known and little noticed buildings and passageways in the town, pointing out their history.
