TROUTBECK’S annual Pancake Races took place on Shrove Tuesday.
A hundred people showed up to the event, which included a 150-metre pancake race for boys, girls, men and women, a walking race for seniors, and an inter-hotel race.
Tony Legge, town crier for Troutbeck, organised the event despite the snow.
“It went really well,” Mr. Legge said. “There were some big snow flakes coming down first thing in the morning and I thought ‘We have just got to go for it’. But it all cleared, the sun came out, and everybody had a great time.”
Stephen Dickinson broke Troutbeck’s previous record in the stationary tossing competition, after flipping his pancake 147 times in a minute.
And there was a dramatic finish in the Inter-Hotel competition. The Broadoaks Country House Hotel retained their trophy after the Holbeck Ghyll team tripped three yards from the line.
The Elias family, of Troutbeck, dominated the men’s and women’s 150-metre pancake races, with Dougie and Eva Elias winning their respective sprints. Dougie Elias was awarded with a dinner for two at the Holbeck Ghyll, while Eva Elias was given a dinner for two at the Mortal Man as her prize.
Verity Jacques-Hale, of Troutbeck, was the winner of the girls event, while Jack Hutchinson won the boys event. John Hyde celebrated his 30th wedding anniversary in style by reigning supreme in the seniors walking event.
